For my final research project in COM 370: "Behind the Scenes and Beyond the Stereotypes," I collaborated with classmates Camry Wilborn and Giovanna Calloway to create a podcast exploring the power of the English language. While reflecting on what surprised us most during our study abroad experience, we all agreed that we were unaware of the extent to which the English language is utilized around the world. Everyone had anecdotes of two natives from non-English-speaking countries who were able to communicate because of a mutual knowledge of the English language. With so many languages spoken in such close proximity to each other in Europe, why would people choose to communicate in English? This was the question we were asking ourselves when we decided to interview Dr. Roberta Cimarosti--a professor, scholar of post-colonial literature, and assistant program director of Casa Artom. Our podcast addresses the power of the English language and its role in global citizenship--using our interview with Dr. Cimarosti and input from Casa Artom's Fall 2014 Resident Adviser, Shelby Taylor.
